Frances Kai-Wha Wang Keynote Speaker

Frances Kai-Hwa Wang to Be Keynote Speaker

Pam Byrnes, Mark Ouimet and Michigan Pops Choir added to the program

One World One Family is planning the program for the Community Celebration event on January 18, at 7pm at the WSEC Auditorium.

The keynote speaker is France Kai-Hwa Wang. Ms. Wang writes the Multicultural Living column for ANNARBOR.COM. She will address this year’s theme for MLKJr. Day: Living in Harmony. Her column speaks to living with diversity and how to handle the everyday issues – good, bad and funny – that come with multicultural living.

Our State Representative Pam Byrnes and our County Commissioner Mark Ouimet will be sharing a few thoughts. Both have long been supportive of Chelsea’s efforts to celebrate Dr. King.

The winner of the 8th annual Carrying the Dream Award will be announced. This award is presented each year "to the person or group that has made a significant contribution to advancing the understanding of the world's different cultures, respect for diversity and non-discriminatory attitudes and practices in Chelsea, Michigan and to furthering the dreams and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Previous awards have included the Chelsea School Principals for their anti-bullying efforts and Faith-in-Action for their work to ease the effects of poverty.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Chelsea’s own Michigan Pops Choir will perform several songs to close the program

Community groups are encouraged to come as a group and sit together. OWOF will be recognizing all groups in attendance.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring canned goods or personal care items to be donated to Faith-in-Action. Collection boxes will be available at the door.

This will be an exciting evening and we would like to fill the auditorium. While the weather may be cold, it’s an important time to be present. As Jackie Maveal of OWOF said, “This is a time to stand up and be counted, to show that Chelsea supports the principles of Dr. King. The program is simple and enjoyable but just being there is the benefit for the whole community.”

One World One Family was founded in 2001 and organized Chelsea’s first Community Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January 2002. Their goal is to help the community recognize the diversity of the human family while promoting understanding of the world’s cultures through activities and educational events.
